How about a welcome? And why do you have some of the policies you have?
Why a rowing social network? Welcome to row2k's new Community effort. As you muck around, you'll see many features that are not unlike other social networks out there, hopefully with more stuff to come, both familiar and new. Why do this on row2k if you can do a lot of the same elsewhere? It's my sense that the rowing community is a world unto itself, with borderline fanatical participants, and we might not want to drag all our non-rowing friends into it, lest they think we are obsessed, crazy, boring, or worse. A social network that is all rowing (and all rowers), all the time seemed to make sense. Many of our policies may seem a bit overly cautious, but we are including them for the simple reason that many of the issues and behaviors we try to address can create massive headaches not only for the target of any comments or attacks, but also for our moderators and staff. We are trying to do far too many other things with the row2k site in general to allow policing and babysitting activities derail and distract us from the aggregate services we are trying to provide. In most cases, it's nothing personal. At any given time, there are only one or two people working on row2k; and we just don't have the resources to offer anything but the policies as outlined here. If you are mainly looking for a place to give someone else a lot of grief, there are many places to do so without creating a drain on the resources of row2k, and we strongly encourage you to use those. If folks still insist on doing things that detract heavily from everything else we are trying to do, we will act as swiftly and decisively as possible to end it.
Commercial enterprises. row2k reserves the right to restrict the presence and activity of commercial enterprises on row2k. If we were going to go public and enjoy a $15 billion valuation, we wouldn't care who was hawking wares on the site, but since we all know that isn't going to happen in our sport, we need to be able to require a business relationship with folks who want to use row2k to reach and make money from the row2k audience. For example, if all our advertisers just set up shop in the Community section, and stopped advertising, we would have to shut down the whole thing, and that's just not an attractive outcome for almost anyone.
Anonymity. We encourage people to use their real names when creating row2k Community accounts; connecting with rowing friends is the whole point after all. That said, we have no intention of disclosing anyone's identity to anyone else. If you violate policy, however, or are asked to moderate your behavior and fail to do so, we reserve the right to use real names and to use them publicly as we alone deem necessary. We will not do this lightly (as is not always the case elsewhere), but we will use this option if need be. That said, we offer no guarantee of your complete anonymity whatsoever if you decide to use our Web site. There are other places on the Web folks can say and do almost anything they care to without having to take responsibility for their words and actions; we encourage folks who are so inclined to visit and enjoy those services.
Libel, slander, untruths, half truths, lies, character assassination, etc – we all know it when you see it. This stuff may seem like a good idea at the time, but won't be tolerated for the simple reason that this kind of behavior can create massive headaches not only for the target of any comments or attacks, but also for our moderators and staff. If you start to suck up a lot of our energy, we will be forced to delete accounts, share names, etc. Again, this will not be done lightly, but we are going to endeavor not to let situation or conditions get too far gone.
Ownership. Before you post anything, make sure you owned it prior to posting.
What about free speech? The laws of free speech apply to public places, the halls of government, your own Web site. They do not apply to private spaces such as privately owned homes or privately owned Web sites. While we admire and respect everyone's entitlement to have their own opinion, we are not compelled in any way to provide an unfettered platform for the airing of these opinions. You are welcome to create your own site or platform elsewhere. The main reason for this is not that we don't like what you have to say, but, as mentioned above and in many other places and many other times on the site, we do not have the resources to give you a place to say anything and everything you want to. If rowing somehow becomes bigger than college football, and this situation changes, this policy would likely change as well.
We hope this new Community is safe, productive, useful, valuable, and fun.
